Clean Good Silver Jewellery and Faux Jewellery

Silver is a popular metal for Jewellery manufacturing. It is classy and trendy at the same time. Sterling silver is the popular version of creating beautiful jewellery pieces. While it is great to have a good collection of silver Jewellery, it is also important to know how to maintain its shine and lustre.

Silver tends to oxidize easily when exposed to moisture and elements like sulphur present in the air. It also oxidizes when in contact with cosmetics, perfumes or chemicals found in household cleaning products.

Avoid Tarnishing

The best way to avoid oxidation is to frequently wear your silver Jewellery. If you would like to store it then it should be stored dry in airtight plastic bags or boxes with a soft cloth inside to avoid any scratches. Airtight storage helps to reduce contact with air and the elements that lead to tarnishing.

Methods to clean good silver Jewellery

If your Jewellery gets tarnished and you want to remove it then the silver anti tarnish polishing cloth should be your go to solution; you can also use any other soft cloth like flannel or microfiber that has no lint. A special silver cleaning cloth has some infused chemicals whereas one at home is chemical free. It depends on the severity of tarnish. Either way it is simple to clean with a cloth rubbing in a back and forth motion. It helps bring the lost shine back.

Few more ways to get rid of tarnish

The safest one to remove tarnish is soaking the jewellry in warm soapy water. Simply use a few drops of mild dish soap free of ammonia and phosphate in warm water and soak the Jewellery in it. After about half an hour take it out and rub it with a soft bristle toothbrush.

If the soap doesn't work another way is to make a paste of baking soda and water in a 2:1 ratio and rub with a soft cloth. In order to make this paste more potent you can replace water with vinegar. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and the mix of vinegar and baking soda and apply it on your Jewellery and let it sit for a couple of hours and then rinse.

Another very effective way to clean silver is by taking a bowl and lining it with silver foil. Then fill the bowl with boiling water and add some baking soda with a little salt and let the Jewellery sit for 5 min to 10 min. This method helps to get rid of tarnish and make your Jewellery shining again.

Another popular trick is to use non gel toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush and rub it over the Jewellry and voila! You have the sparkle back. You can't however use it on anything silver plated.

A mix of about 1/2 cup lemon juice with 1 teaspoon olive oil can also help remove the tarnish. Gently rub this solution with a soft cloth on the Jewellery to get that sparkle back.

All the above methods should be used with extreme care and use only non abrasive clothes. After each clean the Jewellery should be rinsed with warm water and dried with a soft cloth. Advantage of cleaning silver Jewellery besides retaining its splendour is that its resale value will remain high and more value will be retained. The price after cleaning will improve as the percieved value of the Jewellery will be higher in the eyes of a buyer.
